WHAT IS SPYWARE?

Spyware is when someone surreptitiously installs software on your computer, usually without you knowing about it, and therefore without your consent. It can get into your computer as a result of a virus, or when you download and install new software.

It gathers information and forwards it to another party, or sometimes controls your computer (they can feasibly scan files on your drives, reading documents and private information). They can take up resources such as memory, making your computer run slower or even crash. They can also pose security risks as well as invade your privacy.

For example, a spyware application can monitor your keystrokes (what keys you’re pressing on the computer) and transmit this back to the person who programmed the application. Imagine doing your banking online and having someone ‘see’ your PIN and account details – it’d be like someone watching over your shoulder at the ATM.

The sad thing is most people don’t even know then have been infected with spyware untl it’s too late. We always suggest using programs such as ZoneAlarm or other spyware and antivirus software to prevent spyware and virus infections.
